This imaging will allow doctors to identify the stage of breast cancer in patients that have already been diagnosed. In turn, this knowledge can lead to more specific treatment methods and better planning of surgeries. What Couples Who Communicate Well Do Differently

first_imgRefinery29:Countless books and articles have been written on the importance of communicating in romantic relationships, but a recent study suggests that there’s one aspect of communication that stands out above the rest: empathy. The study, published last month in Psychological Science, found that feeling empathy mattered more than simply listening to what partners had to say.Read the whole story: Refinery29last_img

New psychology research sheds light on motivations to engage in infidelity

first_imgShare Share on Facebook LinkedIn “However, until now we hadn’t had access to a population that was specifically using an online website for that behavior. After publishing some previous work on motivations to engage in infidelity, the opportunity to collect data from a sample of folks currently seeking an extradyadic partner presented itself, and we jumped at the chance.”In the study, 545 members of AshleyMadison.com, a popular website for those interested in having extra-marital affairs, completed a brief anonymous online survey regarding their motivations to engage in infidelity and other factors. The majority of the participants (81%) reported they were male and the average age was 48.89 years.Unsurprisingly, those who indicated that their primary partner did not adequately meet their needs were more likely to report seeking a secondary partner because they had “fallen out of love.”“One of the things that we found to be most prevalent in the data was that the secondary partner (or ‘the other woman/man’) was not as big of an influence or motivation to cheat as the ‘real world’ might lead us to believe. The biggest influence/motivation to cheat was dissatisfaction in the primary relationship, especially for males. However, greater sociosexuality (i.e., more comfort with casual sex) was very influential for both males and females,” the researchers told PsyPost. The researchers found that participants who were younger and had greater Christian identification were more likely to report seeking an affair to “get back” at their steady partner.Women and those who reported lower relationship satisfaction were more likely to report an interest in infidelity because they felt neglected. Participants who were pursuing a secondary partner because they wanted more frequent sex tended to be male, have an unrestricted sociosexual orientation, greater Christian identification, and less satisfaction with their primary partner.“We are both very interested in what happens next. For example, how does someone engage in infidelity and also attempt to continue the current primary relationship simultaneously? We expect to examine this behavior through cognitive dissonance theory, and are really interested in the magnitude of aversion that might be experienced, the dissonance reduction strategies that people might use, and whether they have to keep re-using those strategies over and over,” Hackathorn and Ashdown said. The researchers initially recruited 2,030 paying members of the website. However, 1,485 participants were excluded from the study because they were not using the website to cheat.“The AshleyMadison.com website is a dating website. Due to the hack that happened a couple of years ago, we began our study under the faulty assumption that it was a ‘cheating’ website — and of course some of that came from their slogan ‘Life is short, have an affair.’ How shocked were we to find out that a clear majority of the participants who completed our study were just in it for dating – not infidelity? Some of them were really angry about our assumption too,” Hackathorn and Ashdown said. The study, “The Webs We Weave: Predicting Infidelity Motivations and Extradyadic Relationship Satisfaction“, was published online on April 6, 2020. New research published in The Journal of Sex Research provides insights into factors associated with emotional and sexual motivations for infidelity. The findings indicate that one of the most consistent predictors is dissatisfaction with the primary partner.Satisfaction with the secondary “cheating” partner, on the other hand, is a less consistent predictor.“We have always been interested in the motivations to engage in infidelity,” said study authors Jana Hackathorn and Brien K. Ashdown, an associate professor at Murray State University and associate professor at Hobart & William Smith Colleges, respectively.center_img Email Share on Twitter Pinterestlast_img read more

Tribunal backs judges in pensions dispute

first_imgThe employment tribunal has ruled that the government’s transitional pension arrangements for 210 judges amount to unlawful age discrimination, in a judgment that could have far-reaching consequences for public sector employers. The tribunal’s judgment, published today, states that the lord chancellor and Ministry of Justice ‘have treated and continue to treat the claimants less favourably than their comparators because of their age.‘The [lord chancellor and MoJ] have failed to show their treatment of the claimants to be a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim.’Responding to today’s ruling, a government spokesperson said: ‘We are disappointed by the court’s findings and will be considering whether to appeal the judgment.’Six High Court judges, including Sir Rabinder Singh, were among 210 claimants challenging the lord chancellor and the ministry over transitional provisions regarding pension reforms.Tribunal judge Stuart Williams reserved judgment following a seven-day public hearing.Sending his judgment to parties today, Williams said an aim which amounts to an intention to treat one group more favourably and another less favourably, solely by reference to the age of those in the groups cannot, without further rational explanation of the reason for it, be legitimate. His judgment states: ‘The respondents have failed to adduce any evidence of disadvantage suffered by the fully protected and the taper-protected groups of judges which called for redress, or any social policy objective which was served by treating those groups more favourably and the claimant group less favourably.’He added that the respondents ‘have failed to demonstrate beyond the level of “mere generalisations” how consistency in the matter of transitional protection was capable of contributing to their social policy objective, especially since so much in the [judicial pension scheme] was inconsistent with other reformed pension schemes’.Shubha Banerjee, associate solicitor in the employment team at Leigh Day, representing 204 claimants, said: ‘This is a great victory for our clients, many of whom sit alongside older judges who were appointed some years after them but who are, in effect, paid more purely because they are older.‘The fact that there is a significant number of female and [black, Asian and minority ethnic] judges in the younger group simply compounds the unfairness of the changes that were made to judicial pensions.’Leigh Day says today’s decision could have ramifications for other public sector groups, such as teachers, firefighters and prison officers, who have been subjected to similar negative changes to their pensions.Solicitor Shah Qureshi, of London firm Bindmans, representing the High Court judges, said: ‘The lord chancellor failed to show there was a legitimate aim to the government’s discriminatory reforms. The changes discriminate against younger judges and disproportionately impact on women and people from BAME backgrounds.'[Tribunal judge Stuart Williams] rejected the argument that the protection of those closest to retirement whilst compelling younger judges to join the new pension scheme was a legitimate aim. He points out that this “aim” is essentially a reference to treating a group differently because of age rather than some other reason.’The tribunal also found that the changes were not proportionate bearing in mind that the changes to the pension scheme are likely to have greater adverse impact on younger judges. It was accepted that judges compelled to transfer to the new scheme would suffer a serious adverse impact on their pensions.’The judgment states that the cost of the protection provided by the transitional provisions to salaried judges, both fully and taper-protected, is £23m. The cost of including the currently unprotected judges is £70m. If judges who were in fee-paid office before 1 April 2012 and subsequently became salaried are included, the figures rise to £28m and £118m respectively.Representation:For the High Court judges: Blackstone Chambers’ Michael Beloff QC and Ben Jaffey QC were instructed by Shah Qureshi and Nina Khuffash of Bindmans. For the 204 judges: Outer Temple Chambers’ Andrew Short QC and Naomi Ling were instructed by Shubha Banerjee and Chris Benson of Leigh Day.For the lord chancellor and Ministry of Justice: Brick Court Chambers’ Martin Chamberlain QC, Old Square Chambers’ Ben Collins QC and Littleton barrister Katherine Apps were instructed by the Government Legal Department.last_img read more
